Not in the sky, not in the midst of the sea, not if we enter into the clefts of the mountains, is there known a spot in the whole world where a man might be freed from an evil deed.

A Grasshopper sat chirping in the branches of a tree. A Fox heard her, and, thinking what a dainty morsel she would make, he tried to get her down by a trick. Standing below in full view of her, he praised her song in the most flattering terms, and begged her to descend, saying he would like to make the acquaintance of the owner of so beautiful a voice. But she was not to be taken in, and replied, “You are very much mistaken, my dear sir, if you imagine I am going to come down: I keep well out of the way of you and your kind ever since the day when I saw numbers of grasshoppers’ wings strewn about the entrance to a fox’s earth.”

Even the gods envy those who are awakened and not forgetful, who are given to meditation, who are wise, and who delight in the repose of retirement (from the world).

Thy life has come to an end, thou art come near to death (Yama), there is no resting-place for thee on the road, and thou hast no provision for thy journey.

[4] Sic tuto serpens etiam pestifera tractatur dum riget frigore: non desunt tunc illi venena sed torpent. Multorum crudelitas et ambitio et luxuria, ut paria pessimis audeat, fortunae favore deficitur. Eadem velle [subaudi si] cognosces: da posse quantum volunt.

Dost thou not see how the handicraftsmen accommodate themselves up to a certain point to those who are not skilled in their craft—nevertheless they cling to the reason [the principles] of their art and do not endure to depart from it? Is it not strange if the architect and the physician shall have more respect to the reason [the principles] of their own arts than man to his own reason, which is common to him and the gods?

朝與下大夫言，侃侃如也；與上大夫言，誾誾如也。君在，踧踖如也，與與如也。

[1] Putas me tibi scripturum quam humane nobiscum hiemps gerit, quae et remissa fuit et brevis, quam malignum ver sit, quam praeposterum frigus, et alias ineptias verba quaerentium? Nec inmerito; nam primum supervacuum est dolere si nihil dolendo proficias; deinde iniquum est queri de eo quod uni accidit, omnibus restat; deinde desiderii stulta conquestio est, ubi minimum interest inter amissum et desiderantem. Eo itaque aequiore animo esse debemus quod quos amisimus sequimur.

食不厭精，膾不厭細。食饐而餲，魚餒而肉敗，不食。色惡不食，臭惡不食。失飪不食，不時不食。割不正不食，不得其醬不食。肉雖多，不使勝食氣。唯酒無量，不及亂。沽酒市脯不食。不撤薑食，不多食。祭于公，不宿肉。祭肉不出三日，出三日，不食之矣。食不語，寢不言。雖疏食菜羹瓜祭，必齊如也。

[3] Ego me omissa misericordia vindicabo et tibi ingentem epistulam inpingam, quam tu si invitus leges, dicito 'ego mihi hoc contraxi', teque inter illos numera quos uxor magno ducta ambitu torquet, inter illos quos divitiae per summum adquisitae sudorem male habent, inter illos quos honores nulla non arte atque opera petiti discruciant, et ceteros malorum suorum compotes.

Ceux qui ont peine à croire en cherchent un sujet en ce que les Juifs ne croient pas. — Si cela était si clair, dit-on, pourquoi ne croiraient-ils pas ? — et voudraient quasi qu’ils crussent, afin de n’être point arrêtés par l’exemple de leur refus. As to living in the best way, this power is in the soul, if it be indifferent to things which are indifferent. And it will be indifferent, if it looks on each of these things separately and all together, and if it remembers that not one of them produces in us an opinion about itself, nor comes to us; but these things remain immovable, and it is we ourselves who produce the judgements about them, and, as we may say, write them in ourselves, it being in our power not to write them, and it being in our power, if perchance these judgements have imperceptibly got admission to our minds, to wipe them out; and if we remember also that such attention will only be for a short time, and then life will be at an end. Besides, what trouble is there at all in doing this? [22] 'Bonum ex malo non fit; divitiae [autem fiunt] fiunt autem ex avaritia; divitiae ergo non sunt bonum.' 'Non est' inquit 'verum, bonum ex malo non nasci; ex sacrilegio enim et furto pecunia nascitur. Itaque malum quidem est sacrilegium et furtum, sed ideo quia plura mala facit quam bona; dat enim lucrum, sed cum metu, sollicitudine, tormentis et animi et corporis.'

To my own free will the free will of my neighbour is just as indifferent as his poor breath and flesh.
